SRNET is part of a bigger picture — Canada’s National Research and Education Network (NREN). Canada's NREN is an essential collective of people, tools, services, and digital infrastructure that provides a collaborative environment to advance Canadian leadership in research, education and innovation. CANARIE and its twelve provincial and territorial partners form Canada's NREN. We connect Canada's researchers, educators and innovators to each other and to data, technology, and colleagues around the world.

As the Saskatchewan partner in Canada's NREN, SRNET connects Saskatchewan's research and education institutions to their peers nationally and around the world. The NREN is a powerful example of nationwide collaboration in support of research and innovation that benefits all Canadians.

It comprises a system of high-speed, fiber optic networks. The backbone network is CANARIE, Canada’s Advanced Research and Innovation Network, which connects Canadians to over 100 similar advanced networks internationally. SRNET is Saskatchewan's provincial network.

The NREN provides critical infrastructure for emerging applications such as cloud computing, data storage, visualization and distribution, and advanced videoconferencing. Each provincial network contributes their own unique specialties to the success of Canada's research network. The National Research and Education Network supports access to data and tools for Canadians participating in leading-edge research, innovation, and discovery.
